Jeff Williams was born in 1958 and raised on a family farm near Winter, Wisconsin, where his parents and grandfather instilled in him the values of perseverance, education, hard work, and service. Encouraged by his father, Jeff attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, beginning a remarkable career that would take him from Army aviation to the International Space Station.
Williams served 27 years in the U.S. Army, becoming a highly accomplished Army aviator and flight engineer. His military career included assignments involving aeronautical engineering, aviation operations, and leadership, culminating in his selection as a NASA astronaut. He ultimately logged approximately 3,100 hours in more than 50 aircraft.
Selected as an astronaut in 1996, Jeff became deeply involved in the construction and operation of the International Space Station. On his first spaceflight aboard Atlantis in 2000, he served as flight engineer and lead spacewalker. He subsequently completed three long-duration missions aboard the ISS, serving twice as station commander and participating in multiple spacewalks. In total, Jeff spent 534 days in space and more than 32 hours outside the spacecraft during five EVAs.
Between missions, Jeff held numerous leadership positions within NASA, including roles in the Astronaut Office, development of the Space Shuttle cockpit upgrade, Assistant Director of Flight Operations at Johnson Space Center, and Chair of the Multinational Crew Operations Panel. He also commanded a nine-day underwater NEEMO mission.
Jeff's accomplishments include the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, four NASA Space Flight Medals, two Legions of Merit, the Master Army Aviator designation, and induction into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame. He also authored The Work of His Hands, featuring photographs taken from space.
